Meeting point: meeting at the cable car terminus in Cervinia for equipment check and a short briefing.
We take the cable car to the Guide del Cervino hut, where we have dinner and spend the night.
Difference in altitude: 700 m
Ascent/descent time: 8-10 hours
From the hut, we will head to the Breithorn Pass (3,820 m), stopping just before the Porta Nera (3,720 m) to climb the Roccia Nera – about 350 m at a gradient between 35° and 40° to reach the top (4,075 m). From the summit, we will go along the edge of the ridge – first over snow, then over bouldery rock – to the summit of the Gendarme (4,106 m).
Two stretches fitted with climbing aids will take us down to a saddle at 4,055 m, from where we can go up to the Eastern Breithorn (4,141 m). From there, we head down about 25 m to the base of the rocky ridge that leads to the summit of the Central Breithorn (4,160 m). The crest is made up of three rocky prominences, with good rock and climbing up to grade IV on the first tower. From the summit of the Central Breithorn, we will take the snowy ridge down to another saddle before the final ascent to the top of the Western Breithorn (4,165 m).
We will go back to the Breithorn Pass and from there to the cable car station in Cervinia via the normal route.
