Ascent to the Mont Blanc from the French side: a challenging route that touches three of the massif's peaks…
PHOTOS

PROGRAM

The route, entirely in French territory, is longer and harder than the traditional one since it touches all the 3 Mont Blancs (Mont Blanc du Tacul, Mont Maudit and the final summit). The ascent begins at Cosmiques Hut (3,616 m), reachable downhill from the Aiguille du Midi lift arrival station. You reach the Mont Blanc’s summit via an extremely varied trail going through an extraordinary glacial environment.

DAY

Difference in altitude: 200 m
Ascent time: 30 min – 1 hour
Meeting point: meeting in Courmayeur for equipment checking and short per briefing.

Transfer to Chamonix. Departure from Chamonix in the early afternoon with the gondola lift towards Aiguille du Midi (3,870 m). From here we’ll descend an airy, snow-covered crest onto the glacier below; having traversed it, we’ll ascend slightly up to the Cosmiques Hut (about a 1/2 hour hike). Dinner and overnight stay in the hut.

DAY

Difference in altitude: 1,400 m
Ascent/descent time: 9-11 hours

We’ll set out around 2 am. After an initial, slightly downhill stretch, we’ll begin the long ascent towards the shoulder of the Mont Blanc du Tacul (4,100 m). From here we’ll descend slightly and cross an ample icy plateau, then tackle a steep ascent that culminates in a narrow incline with fixed ropes, until the shoulder of the Mont Maudit (4,400 m). As dawn breaks, we’ll once again descend towards the Colle della Brenva (4,350 m). Before the final stretch, we’ll take a short break for water and a high-energy snack.
The last 500 metres are the hardest, as you can really feel the altitude. Reaching the summit requires great determination and good physical training.
It is crucial to save sufficient energy for the descent (at least 5-6 hours), along the same route or via the Goûter Hut.
